In a major move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the discontinuation of Clean-up Marshals across Mumbai, effective Friday, 4th April 2025. The decision comes after persistent complaints about the enforcement approach of these municipal workers deployed under the Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan.

In a post on X on Friday, BMC stated, “The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to discontinue the services of Clean-up Marshals, deployed under the Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan for maintaining cleanliness across Mumbai, effective from Friday, 4th April 2025.”

Explaining the reason behind the move, the civic body said, “Due to persistent complaints regarding the Clean-up Marshals, the municipal administration has resolved to cease their services in all administrative wards.”

Mumbaikars have been requested to report to the respective administrative ward office if any Clean-up Marshal is found attempting to impose fines from 4th April 2025 onwards.

The civic body has also appealed to citizens to adhere to cleanliness regulations to keep the city clean and beautiful.

After BMC’s announcement, many social media users welcomed the decision.

In the past few years, these marshals—who were authorized to fine individuals caught engaging in activities such as spitting, defecating, or littering in public spaces—gained a reputation as extortionists.

After receiving a plethora of complaints, and in an effort to curb corruption, BMC introduced a mobile app that allows marshals to issue penalty receipts electronically.

Earlier, it was reported that BMC’s one-year contract with Clean-up Marshals is set to expire on April 5.
