A Black Moon is an uncommon occurrence that takes place when there is either no New Moon or Full Moon in February, or when a month features two New Moons. This occurrence can take place solely in February, as it is the only month that is shorter than a lunar cycle. Interestingly, the appearance of a black moon is influenced by the time zone.
Black Moon 2024: When and how to watch?
In December 2024, there will be a pair of New Moons. The second New Moon, recognized as a Black Moon, will occur on December 30, 2024, at 22:26 UTC.
In certain areas, particularly those ahead of UTC, this will occur on December 31, 2024. Nevertheless, sections of the US and Canada encountered a Black Moon earlier on November 30, 2024, and will not see another in December.
What Are Black Moons?
The phases of the Moon do not coincide exactly with the calendar. A lunar month lasts approximately 29.5 days, whereas the majority of calendar months are a bit longer.
This discrepancy sometimes leads to months featuring two New Moons or seasons that include an additional New Moon. These extra New Moons are referred to as Black Moons.
Black Moons are not as rare as they may seem. A monthly Black Moon (two New Moons occurring in a single month) takes place approximately every 29 months. A seasonal Black Moon (four New Moons within one season) happens approximately every 33 months. The most uncommon type—when February lacks either a New Moon or a Full Moon—occurs once every 19 years.
Next Occurance Of Black Moons
Besides December 31, 2024, the Black moon will appear on August 23, 2025 and August 31, 2027
