Mumbai: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has received a death threat amid his vocal campaign against the use of illegal loudspeakers at mosques across Mumbai. Following the threat, a written complaint was filed at the Navghar Police Station.

Police have registered a non-cognizable (NC) offense against the accused, Yusuf Umar Ansari, under Section 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and have launched an investigation into the matter.

According to available information, the accused allegedly called Somaiya and issued a direct death threat. In response, several BJP leaders met with Mumbai’s Special Commissioner of Police, Deven Bharti, on Monday, demanding that a formal FIR be registered.

Earlier, on April 5, BJP leaders had submitted a similar written complaint at the Shivajinagar Police Station regarding the same threat. The accused had reportedly warned Somaiya that he would break into his home and kill him on April 8.

Kirit Somaiya has recently raised the issue of 72 mosques allegedly using loudspeakers without permission, which has sparked strong reactions. Mumbai Police have initiated a thorough investigation.

BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha has demanded strict legal action against Yusuf Ansari, who allegedly issued an open death threat to the senior party leader. The threat comes amid Somaiya’s campaign against illegal loudspeakers atop mosques in Mumbai.

“BJP’s Mumbai leaders met with Special Police Commissioner Deven Bharti today, urging swift and firm action against Yusuf Ansari. The courts have already laid down clear guidelines regarding the use of loudspeakers, including specific time restrictions. Even the Chief Minister has expressed his stance on this matter. Despite that, Yusuf Ansari dares to issue death threats. This cannot be ignored,” Kotecha said.

He added that Somaiya’s strong stand in recent days regarding illegal loudspeakers is what triggered the threat. BJP leaders have called for the registration of an FIR and a thorough investigation into the matter. Police have already registered a non-cognizable offense under Section 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and have launched a probe.

In connection with the recent death threat received by former MP Kirit Somaiya, a delegation of senior BJP leaders met Mumbai’s Special Police Commissioner Deven Bharti on the evening of April 7. The meeting took place at the Police Commissioner’s Office, where the delegation submitted a formal memorandum demanding a thorough investigation and strict action against the accused.

The delegation included MLA Mihir Kotecha, MLA Parag Shah, MLA Captain Tamil Selvan, former MLA Sunil Rane, former corporator Vinod Mishra, Prabhakar Shinde, Makarand Narvekar, and Harshita Narvekar.
