During the discussion on the Constitution in Parliament, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) raised questions on the policies of the Central Government. TDP MP Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu expressed serious concerns over the upcoming delimitation process in the Lok Sabha. He said that delimitation based on population would harm the southern states, while the northern states could benefit politically.

Southern states will suffer loss

MP Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu said that if the next delimitation process takes place on the basis of population, the result will go against the southern states. He stated that:

  • The seats of states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan may increase from the present 169 to 324.
  • At the same time, the seats of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka will increase from the present 129 to only 164.

He described this process as against the federal structure and said that it would harm the interests of the southern states.

matter of interest to the Constitution and federalism

Devarayalu said that the benefit of delimitation should also be given to those states which have performed better in population control. He appealed for a just and balanced approach instead of population-based delimitation to maintain federalism.

Deadline for Governors to approve bills

The TDP MP also demanded that a time limit should be fixed for governors to approve the bills passed by the state assemblies. He said that this step is necessary to remove delays and obstructions in the work of state governments.

target on congress

The MP also attacked Congress during the discussion and said that despite opposition from the state assembly, the central government divided Andhra Pradesh. He called it against democracy and federalism.

Seats may increase in 2029 Lok Sabha elections

It is noteworthy that there is a plan to hold elections with increased seats in the Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2029. Under the delimitation law, no change can be made in the Lok Sabha seats till 2026. After this, the process of delimitation will be completed on the basis of census. It is estimated that the delimitation will be finalized after the 2027 census.
