BJP leader Amit Malviya on Thursday hit out at DMK and Congress Party for replacing the Rupee symbol in Tamil Nadu budget with a Tamil letter.
Taking to X, Malviya shared a new and old video, in which former union minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram can be seen felicitating Udaya Kumar, the designer of the ₹ symbol. Sharing the video, Malviya stated, “More embarrassment for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The ₹ symbol was designed by Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, a Tamilian and the son of a former DMK MLA. The irony doesn’t stop there—the symbol was adopted in 2010 when the Congress was in power at the Centre and the DMK governed the state.”
“None other than P. Chidambaram, another Tamilian and a DMK ally, felicitated Dr. Udaya Kumar for the design,” he added.
Earlier today, Malviya attacked Tamil Nadu CM and alleged that he insulted Tamilians by dropping the ₹ sign from the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26 document.
“Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam is an Indian academic and designer, son of a former DMK MLA, who designed the Indian rupee (₹) sign, which was accepted by Bharat,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is vehemently protesting against Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP), replaced the official rupee symbol (₹) with a Tamil character in the state’s 2025 Budget.
This unprecedented step marks the first instance of a state rejecting the national currency symbol, intensifying its opposition to the NEP.
