Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A pickpocket bit a passenger’s thumb in an attempt to escape after being caught red-handed in MP’s Gwalior. The incident took place at the city railway station on Saturday. The passenger had deboarded from the Jhelum Express when his wallet got stolen by the accused.
The victim has been taken to the local hospital for treatment as the injury was very severe. The GRP has registered a case against the thief for theft, assault, and causing grievous injury. The accused has been taken into custody.
According to information, the incident occurred on Platform 2 when Raju Batham, a passenger traveling on the Jhelum Express from Dabra to Gwalior, noticed his wallet was missing. Raju and a friend were heading to a wedding ceremony and were disembarking amid a rush at the station. Realizing his wallet was gone, Raju spotted a suspicious man fleeing the scene. Acting swiftly, he and his friend chased the man down the platform and caught him.
When confronted, the pickpocket denied the theft and started arguing. He was also accompanied by two to three accomplices, who tried to intimidate Raju. When Raju demanded his wallet back, the thief hit him on the head with a ‘kada’ (steel bangle). As Raju retaliated and raised his hand to defend himself, the pickpocket bit his thumb, severing it and swallowing the piece before shoving Raju away.
Apprehended by other passengers and GRP
As the thief tried to run away, a group of onlooking passengers saw the ordeal and rounded up the thief. The onlookers called up the GRP who took the thief into custody. A case has been filed by the GRP against the thief for theft, assault, and causing grievous injury. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
