Mumbai: BITS Law School, Mumbai, a Law School under the aegis of BITS Pilani, an Institution of Eminence, in collaboration with Surana & Surana International Attorneys (SSIA), announced Mr. Arvind P Datar as the recipient of the Fali Nariman Memorial Award. The honor was given on February 15, 2025, for appreciation of 45 years of service by Mr. Datar in the profession of law.

In remembrance of Indian jurist Fali Nariman (1929-2024), the Fali Nariman Memorial Award has been instituted. Indian practice of law continues to rely on Nariman’s books on constitutional law, judicial autonomy and independence, integrity, and values of a moral nature. This award honours those who best represent his beliefs, which include honesty, moral rectitude, upholding the rule of law, and advancing democratic ideals and the Indian Constitution.

Through his representation in cases before the Supreme Court of India, numerous High Courts, and foreign courts, such as the foreign Court of Justice, Mr. Arvind Datar, Senior Advocate, has made seminal contributions to constitutional, commercial and taxation law.

“Best wishes to BITS Law School in instituting the Fali Nariman Memorial Award,” Mr. Datar said after receiving the distinction. It is a tribute to a lawyer whose life will be an example to the current and future legal professions.

Delivering the presidential address for the event, retired Chief Justice of India Justice UU Lalit averred, “We could not have had a more worthy recipient than Mr. Arvind Datar to confer upon him the very first Fali Nariman Memorial Award.I am an advisor on the BITS Law School advisory council. I could not have asked for anything more to be part of this function.

” BITS and SSIA are honored to present Mr. Arvind Datar the Fali S Nariman Memorial Award,” said Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Bharadwaj, Founding Dean of BITS Law School, Mumbai. The award seeks to celebrate Mr. Datar’s professional life as a paradigm of legal acumen, specifically in the fields of constitutional, commercial, and taxation laws, integrity, humility, ethical conduct, and regard for democratic values.

The award making process included a rigorous scrutiny of 76 nominations by an eminent jury that included Justice Sanjay Gangapurwala, Dr. Lalit Bhasin, Mr. Percival Billimoria, Dr. Aparna Chandra, and Mr. Naveen Raju.
