After the caste survey in Telangana, the bill giving 42% reservation to backward castes (OBC) has been passed in the state assembly. Under this bill, reservation will be given in government jobs, educational institutions and urban and rural body elections.
The bill was supported not only by the ruling Congress but also by opposition parties BRS and BJP (BJP). Three bills related to it were introduced in the Assembly, one of which also includes provision to provide reservation to sub-castes.
Information received from caste survey
The caste survey conducted by the Telangana government revealed that 56.33% of the population in the state belongs to backward castes.
It also includes backward castes of the Muslim community.
When the bill was introduced in the assembly, Backward Caste Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said:
“The message from Telangana Assembly should go that we have supported 42% reservation for all backward castes.”

What did Chief Minister Revanth Reddy say?
Speaking in the assembly, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that Rahul Gandhi had promised that the Congress would give 42% reservation to the backward castes when he comes to power and this bill is a big step towards fulfilling the same promise.
CM Revanth Reddy thanked the opposition parties and said:
“All political parties have supported this bill, it will give a big message to the whole country.”
CM appealed to the central government:
“To implement this bill, the Central Government has to include it in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.,
Rahul Gandhi can raise this issue in Parliament:
CM Revanth Reddy also said that Union Minister Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar should get time to meet Prime Minister Modi so that the issue can be raised at the national level.
BRS and BJP supported, but conditions kept
BRS support
BRS leader Harish Rao said that his party unconditionally supports 42% reservation of backward castes.
BRS leader Gangula Kamlakar said:
“We will have to fight this bill in the country.”
BJP expressed doubt
BJP leader Payal Shankar supported the bill, but questioned the scientificness of the caste survey.
He said:
“We support the Reservation Bill, but it has to be seen whether the caste survey was done properly.
AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s displeasure
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi objected to the Reservation Bill, saying that the manner in which it is being implemented is not correct.
Owaisi’s statement:
“This reservation is not for Muslims, but for the backward castes of the Muslim community, the Congress should stop dividing the country.”
