What does this new guideline say?

This usually happens when a person’s Aadhaar number is not built by a time. In such a situation, it is not possible to directly link the Aadhaar number and PAN. That is why now the Income Tax Department is telling such people to tell their real Aadhaar number to the department.

If a PAN card holder does not tell his real Aadhaar number to the Income Tax Department till this date, then His PAN card can be declared inactive from 1 January 2026This simply means that you will not be able to use that PAN card in any kind of money transaction or tax related work, because the closed PAN card will not be valid.

Those who have to file income tax returns (ITR), they should do this work before 31 July. If you did not update your Aadhaar number on time, then you may also have difficulty in filling ITR. Therefore, it is better to complete this linking process in time.

This instruction has been issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) working under the Ministry of Finance. He says that the record of PAN card holders should have correct and refreshing information, so that any technical or legal troubles can be avoided in future. This step is also considered necessary to strengthen the tax system and bring transparency in information.

How to update your Aadhaar number?

However, CBDT has not clearly explained in its notification what will be the process of giving Aadhaar number information to the Income Tax Department. However, it is believed that for this the same method has to be adopted which is usually used to link PAN-Aadhaar. That is, you have to go to the income tax e-filing portal and update your PAN and Aadhaar information. The good news is that there will probably be no fine for this update.
