Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar recently opened up about violence against women in India. During one of her latest interviews, she also reacted to the Hema Committee report that exposed harassment and sexual exploitation in the Malayalam film industry.
Opening up about the issue of women’s safety beyond the entertainment industry, Bhumi admitted that she often fears for the safety of her own family members. “As a woman in India today, I’m scared. This is again not just about fraternity. I’m scared when my younger cousin who lives with me in Mumbai goes to college and when she doesn’t come home till 11 pm, I get nervous,” she said while speaking at ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025 event.
The actress also criticised the constant presence of violent incidents against women in mainstream news, stating, “There’s a problem when front-page news is only about violence done to women. This is not a one-off thing; this is a regular occurrence.”
Bhumi Pedenkar on Hema Committee Report
The Hema Committee report, released in August last year, marked an important milestone as it was one of the first instances where an Indian film industry underwent a thorough legal examination of workplace harassment.
Expressing her dismay over the findings, Bhumi said, “It is one part of the Indian fraternity where proper legal process was followed. There were heartbreaking and gruesome details that came out.”
Meanwhile, on the work front, Bhumi latest film Mere Husband Ki Biwi hit the big screens on February 21 and it has received mixed reviews from critics and the audience.
Also starring Arjun Kapoor, and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles, the film witnessed a slow start at the box office, collecting only Rs 1.5 crore in India on its opening day. It is facing tough competition from Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which is roaring at the box office, having crossed Rs 310.50 crore worldwide within its first week of release.
Bhumi will next be seen as a cop in her debut web series Daldal. The show is based on Vish Dhamija’s book ‘Bhendi Bazaar’. The actress will be seen as Rita Ferreira, Mumbai’s newly appointed DCP who is haunted by the guilt of her past and dealing with demons of her present.
