Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After the successful completion of the GIS, city’s walls and roads have again fallen victim to neglect and vandalism. Despite substantial investment in beautification projects, people have started damaging and defacing public spaces.
One of the most notable features of Bhopal’s beautification drive was the installation of approximately 5,000 decorative murals across key locations such as Boat Club, Jail Road, VIP Road, Link Roads and Shyamla Hills. However, these vibrant artworks are now being spoilt,as people are spitting betel juice and tobacco on them, leaving ugly stains, especially along Jail Road and VIP Road.
Besides defacement of murals, the city’s decorative lighting is also bearing the brunt. LED bulbs from the lighting display near the boundary wall of the Chief Minister’s residence, situated near Boat Club, have been stolen. Surprisingly, despite the presence of five CCTV cameras in the area, thefts continue, leaving bulb holders empty and unlit. Mayor slamsvandalism In response to the rising incidents of vandalism and theft following Bhopal’s beautification efforts, Mayor Malti Rai has strongly condemned the actions of those responsible and assured citizens that the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking swift action to address the situation.
“We are continuously taking action by imposing fines on those found littering in public spaces, and strict measures will be enforced against those caught spitting on the walls,” said Mayor Rai. She emphasized that such irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated and penalties will be implemented to deter further violations. To curb vandalism, Mayor Rai announced plans to install additional CCTV cameras in strategic locations across the city. Moreover, BMC is forming a special team tasked with monitoring the affected areas, ensuring that the city’s beautification efforts are preserved.
