A day after a 30-year-old woman and her three minor daughters were found hanging in their house in Bhiwandi city in Thane district on Saturday, The Bhiwandi City police on Sunday said the woman allegedly took the drastic step due to disputes in her marital life with her husband and family.

The deceased, identified as Punita, was a tailor by profession. Her daughters – Nandini, 12, Neha, 7) and Anu, 4 – were also found hanging from the ceiling angle of their house in the Phenepada locality. Her husband, Lalji Bharti, discovered the bodies when he returned home from his night shift at a powerloom unit. Upon raising an alarm, neighbours rushed to the spot and alerted the police.

Police recovered a suicide note, purportedly written by Punita, in which she stated that no one should be blamed for the deaths. Krishna Kharat, police inspector of Bhiwandi City police, said during questioning, Bharti revealed that Punita may have taken the step due to ongoing family disputes. However, no foul play has been found so far.

A post-mortem conducted at Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi confirmed hanging as the cause of death. A case of accidental death has been registered. The police have informed the woman’s family members in Uttar Pradesh. The bodies will be handed over for final rites upon their arrival in Bhiwandi, expected by Monday.

The family, who had migrated from Uttar Pradesh a year ago, lived in a rented ground-plus-one storeyed chawl. Further investigation is underway.
