Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Mountaineer Bhawna Dehariya has been named in the Vikram Award 2023 list for her historic Mount Everest (8,848 meters) summit. With this recognition, she became the first woman from Madhya Pradesh to be selected for the Vikram Award in the adventure sports category.

The Madhya Pradesh government annually honors outstanding athletes, coaches, and sports contributors with state-level awards, including the Vikram, Eklavya, Vishwamitra, Lifetime Achievement, and Prabhash Joshi Awards.

The Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare (DSYW), Government of Madhya Pradesh, has announced the list of awardees for Vikram Award 2023. The official award ceremony is yet to take place.

Bhawna makes Chhindwara proud

Hailing from Chhindwara, Bhawna successfully scaled Mount Everest in 2019, marking a significant milestone in her career. She has also conquered multiple peaks across continents, inspiring young athletes, especially women, to pursue adventure sports.

As the brand ambassador of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, Bhawna has been a strong advocate for empowering girls to dream big and challenge barriers in sports and adventure.

Aims to inspire women to opt adventure sports

Bhawna said, “Being named in the Vikram Award list for my Mount Everest summit is a moment of immense pride. This recognition is dedicated to my parents, family, and mentors, whose unwavering support has been my greatest strength. I remain committed to promoting mountaineering and adventure sports in India, inspiring more youth to explore their potential.”

 Her selection for the Vikram Award 2023 stands as a testament to her dedication and the spirit of adventure that continues to inspire the nation. She will officially receive the honor at the upcoming award ceremony.
