The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to include a new face in the coaching staff of the Indian men’s team under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. The move is aimed at strengthening the team’s coaching staff through the appointment of a batting coach. Although no official announcement has been made yet, as reported by Cricbuzz, discussions between the BCCI and the team management indicate that the support staff needs to be further improved.
The report states that some possible names are being considered, including former legends of domestic cricket, but no final decision has been taken yet.
Currently, the Indian coaching staff includes bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coach Abhishek Nair, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip, apart from head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Recently, Team India’s former bowling coach Bharat Arun had said that there is no person in the current coaching setup who can tell Virat Kohli about his mistakes. Giving an example, he told how Ravi Shastri had given important advice to Kohli about the swing of the ball in England, which Kohli later took advantage of.
Arun said, “Shastri had said that in England the ball swings and you stand on the leg stump. You can’t stand there. You have to come to the middle stump and come outside the crease. Kohli accepted this advice and scored four centuries in Australia.”
Bharat Arun also said that to give this advice to Kohli, you need to have the stature and confidence that Shastri had. There is nothing in the current coaching staff that can motivate Kohli to improve.
After Kohli was consistently out in the slips during the Australia tour, it felt as if the coaching staff did not try to improve his technique. Now BCCI is looking for a batting coach who can work with big batsmen like Kohli and Rohit.
