Mira-Bhayandar: In continuance with their action to weed out foreign immigrants who were staying in the twin-city without proper documents, the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police arrested a middle-aged Bangladeshi woman from Mira Road on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the AHTU personnel led by police inspector- Devidas Handore laid a trap and rounded up the suspect from the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road at around 5 pm.

When questioned, the women confessed to being a Bangladeshi national who was illegally staying in India. However, she was found to be in possession of documents including-Aadhar card, PAN card and a Universal Travel Pass (UTP) which was used as an online e-pass designed for fully vaccinated citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the police, the documents were apparently obtained on the virtue of fabricated credentials. Notably hundreds of Aadhaar cards and other identity papers, including driving licenses, PAN cards, and voter ID cards, found in the possession of Bangladeshi nationals, were cancelled in the past one year, after the Border Security Force (BSF) communicated with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and other government agencies, seeking action, sources said.

Meanwhile the accused woman was taken into custody and an offence under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for cheating and forgery along with the Foreigners Act, 1946 and Passport Act, 1950 was registered at the Naya Nagar police station in Mira Road. Investigations were on to ascertain the identity of people involved in facilitating the documents to illegal immigrants, said the police.
