Kolkata: Kolkata police on Friday had arrested a Bangladeshi national from central Kolkata who was staying in Kolkata for the past two years with fake documents.
Following a tip-off, police from Park Street police station raided a hotel in Marquis Street and arrested one Rabi Sharma whose original name is Selim Matabbar.
According to police sources, Matabbar’s house is in Madarihat in Bangladesh. The police sources also confirmed that Matabbar was a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and had fled from Bangladesh two years ago following a political dispute with the then ruling party Awami League.
“After arriving in Kolkata, he had procured fake documents and with the fake documents and identity he had made an original passport. For the last two years he has been working at a hotel in Marquis Street,” said the police sources.
Following the confession the person has been arrested by the police and will be produced to court on Saturday.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the development.
“This is just one person. Such people with false documents are in plenty in the TMC regime. Rajiv Kumar leaving aside party affiliation should use his connection to identify such people,” mentioned Bhattacharya.
TMC minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said, “Aadhaar, Passport is taken care of by the central government.”
