Police secure MMRDA metro labour colony in Thane following arrest of Saif Ali Khan attack suspect, Binoy Das | File Photo

Thane: In the case of the Saif Ali Khan attack, the intruder Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Amin Fakir, alias Binoy Das, 30, who hails from Bangladesh, was arrested early Sunday in the MMRDA metro labour colony in the Kasarwadavli area of Thane.

The workers from the labour colony were afraid after the police combing operations. The entry to Waghbill village, which passes through the labor colony, is prohibited. Heavy security was deployed by the respective contractor; no one is allowed entry except for laborers.

Approximately a total of 70 temporary tin shed rooms, in which 200 to 300 workers were accommodated, were built by the contractor for laborers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam. They all worked here as crane operators, welders, and fabricators. Most of the workers stayed here year-round for one to two years.

Devanand Barde, a security guard, said that the police had been roaming here from Saturday until today after the intruder arrested. The police asked the contractor to dismantle the tin shed rooms if there was no one residing there, to avoid any criminals hiding in the place.

“The entry to Waghbill village, which passes through the labor colony, is prohibited. Heavy security was deployed by the respective contractor; no one is allowed entry except for laborers” another security said.

It is notable that the workers are afraid after the police started an inquiry on Saturday night between 9 and 12 PM about their identity, documents, and their place of origin. The workers came out of the rooms where they had been sleeping at home. They said that they came here for employment. However, after the incident, they are afraid of working here.

Murmul Kaish, who belongs to Malda district in West Bengal and has worked here as a helper in the labor colony for the past three years, said that at night, the police called the workers from the colony to the camp and the people from different states, asking them questions separately. The police took five to six people who belong to Bengal, conducted an investigation with them, and later allowed them to go home.

Hasraj Kumar, a crane operator, worked here for the past two years, said that all workers have submitted their Aadhar cards and PAN cards to the contractor for verification after the intruder was nabbed by the police.

Mohibul Alam, origin belongs to Assam, a veldor, worked here for last three years, lived with labour colony recounted scene of Saturday night, the police arrived here around 9 am and later reached at 100 police personnel in the labour camp. The police called all of us out side the room and checked their mobile phone and dialed one number and asked about the photo of the accused to recognize him.

Pintu Yadav, who worked as a fabricator at the site and lived in the labor colony, said that he was sleeping in a room with five roommates. We, along with other workers, stood in the queue for an inspection of our identities by police team. He recounted that he was exhausted after working during the day and that he did not sleep well at that time. No, we afraid after the incident.”

A woman residing in a labor camp who saw the accused stated that the accused was seeing for her when she went to answer nature’s call. She shouted at him and yelled to stop. However, he fled and hid behind a room. Following this, she alerted a man and her husband and later beat him up. He apologized to her. He then fled from the scene.
