Bangladesh, China signed agreements: During his visit to New Delhi, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised to hand over the Teesta River Water Management work to India in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On June 22, 2024, the two leaders agreed that an Indian team would soon visit Dhaka to prepare a future plan for Teesta Water Management. Now Mohammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, has promised to hand over the work of this river project, which is highly sensitive to India.
Bangladesh and China signed nine agreements
According to reports, on Friday (March 28), Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Nine agreements were signed during this period. Some agreements will affect India’s interests. Muhammad Yunus has indicated his intention to cancel not only the Test Water Management, but also to cancel the agreement signed with India during the tenure of the former Awami League government for the development of Mongla port.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting between Mohammad Yunus and Xi Jinping, Bangladesh welcomed China for modernization and development of Mongla port. China has been monitoring it for a long time. Ignoring China’s heavy pressure, the Hasina government gave India the rights to develop a terminal there in July 2024.
China will create special economic territory in Chatgaon
The Yunus government has announced that China will establish a special economic zone in Chittagong. This will be a major challenge for India’s strategic interests. Till now India has been cooperating with Bangladesh to save its northeastern region from future challenges. But now the Yunus government has expressed the intention of making arrangements to settle China near Chittagong, the nearest port in the northeastern states.
China will help develop special Chinese industrial economic sector in Bangladesh
According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “China will help in creating a special Chinese industrial economic area and industrial park in Bangladesh.” He welcomed a large number of Bangladeshi products in China and the billions of dollars of belt and road initiative (BRI) projects as well as cooperation in digital and maritime economy.
