The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Airport Customs have arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly smuggling Hydroponic Weed worth Rs 5.56 crore from Bangkok.
According to the Customs sources, in the early hours of Tuesday, AIU officers had intercepted a passenger Sabina Yasin, a resident of Thiruvalluvar, Tamil Nadu on the basis of intelligence that she might be carrying narcotics substance, after she arrived from Bangkok.
The Customs officials checked her trolley bags and found six packets containing greenish coloured substance. On testing the said substance was found to be Hydroponic Weed (marijuana). The agency officials recovery total 5565 grams of hydroponic weed valued at Rs 5.56 crore in the illicit market.
The agency officials then recorded Sabina’s statement who admitted she was aware that smuggling of hydroponic weed and other illegal drugs into India attracts stringent punishment. “She said that she was getting handsome amount of quick and easy money in lieu of smuggling the drugs into India,” said an AIU source.
Describing Sabina’s role, an official said, “She is found to be involved in conspiracy with known and unknown persons and aided and abated in procuring, concealment, carrying, transportation and import of drugs into India. Preliminary probe discloses involvement of more people in the case who are yet to be traced.”
