Mumbai: Ashmit Charote, a 20-year-old servant, was detained on Saturday by the Bandra police for questioning in connection with the theft of seven lakh rupees from the residence of a government official working in the state’s power department. Ashmit Charote came to Mumbai with dreams of becoming a successful actor, but due to the theft, he now faces time in jail.
About The Case
According to the FIR, the complainant Gaurav Pukhal, 36, lives in a government colony near Lilavati Hospital in Bandra West. He is currently working as an officer in the Maharashtra State Power Department. Originally from Nagpur, Pukhal was introduced to Ashmit by his friend Vinay Khorgade.
Ashmit’s mother abandoned him, and his father was an alcoholic. Hoping to pursue a career in acting, Ashmit came to Mumbai in February 2025 with Pukhal’s help. Initially, he worked as an assistant in Pukhal’s Nagpur residence. He later shared his aspiration of becoming an actor, which led Pukhal to take him to Mumbai.
On March 6, Pukhal kept Rs. 7 lakh in a cupboard to pay off a gold loan at his Bandra residence. Planning to go to Nagpur on March 14, he checked his bag and realised the cupboard key was missing. When he asked his wife about it, she had no idea. The next day, when Pukhal inspected the cupboard, he discovered that around Rs 7 lakh in cash had been stolen.
