Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former cabinet minister Azam Khan has got partial relief from the Allahabad High Court in an old case. The case is in the year 2008, when he and his son Abdullah Azam were sentenced to two years by the MP-MLA court on charges of blocking the road outside the Chhajrat police station in Moradabad. Azam Khan had filed a criminal revision in the High Court against this decision, on which the single bench of the High Court, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh, has summoned the entire record of the case from the trial court.
Now the High Court will review based on the same record whether the decision of the lower court is in line with legal standards.
What did the lawyer say?
Azam Khan’s lawyer Zubeer Ahmed Khan says that the matter is old and he has been punished under the influence of the political atmosphere. The hearing of this case has now reached a significant turn. Apart from this, Azam Khan has recently been relieved in some other cases. He applied for bail in four cases, out of which in three cases the court has given him regular bail (regular bell). These cases are related to hate speech and enemy property. However, in another case, the court refused to grant bail.
Political journey
Azam Khan’s political career has been full of ups and downs. In 1989, he became a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government for the first time. He then played an important role in the formation of Samajwadi Party in 1992 with Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 1993, he was elected to the Assembly for the first time on the Samajwadi Party ticket and was an MLA nine consecutive times. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan defeated BJP candidate Jayaprada and won the post of MP.
