Ayurvedic Benefits of Priyangu: Natural solution of diseases ranging from stomach to skin

Its botanical name is Callicarpa Macrophylla. Priyangu is used for the treatment of stomach and skin problems, especially due to its nutritional and medicine properties.

Mentioned in ancient texts

Priyangu is mentioned in many ancient texts of Ayurveda like Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Bhavprakash and Dhanvantari Nighantu. Vagbhatta and Sushruta have also recommended Priyangu in their texts to treat various diseases in the form of paste, decoction, oil, ghee and infusion.

Where is found?

The Priyangu plant is usually found in the mountainous areas of India up to a height of about 1800 meters. Modern Science also confirms its medicinal properties, which has increased its importance even more.

Different names in every language

Priyangu is known by different names in different languages. In Sanskrit, names like Vanita, Shubha, and Sumga are called Mathara in Bengali, Gahula in Marathi, Nallu in Tamil, Chimpopil in Malayalam, Ghanula in Gujarati and Dayalo in Nepali. In English it is called fragrant cherry or beauty berry.

Taste and quality

The taste of Priyangu is sharp, bitter and sweet. It balances the vata-bile defects. Its nature is cool, small and dry. It is beneficial in problems like skin tone, wound healing, irritation, vomiting, fever, blood disorders, itching, pimples, and thirst.

Ways of using Priyangu

  • In teeth and gum problems: Rubbing a mixture of Priyangu, Triphala and Nagarmotha on the gums provides relief.
  • In stomach diseases: Taking the powder of Priyangu with honey and milk provides relief in blood problems and stomach problems.
  • Help in UTI and delivery: The extract of Priyangu leaves is beneficial in UTI. During delivery, delivery is easy by applying the paste of Priyangu root under the navel.
  • In arthritis and skin diseases: The paste of Priyangu leaves, bark and flower provides relief in arthritis and leprosy.

Poisonous properties

Priyangu is also useful on the bite of toxic pests. Consumption of its powder reduces the effect of poisoning.

Caution

Use Priyangu only with the advice of an Ayurvedic doctor. Generally 1-2 grams of powder can be consumed.
