Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department (BGTRRD) has written to the Divisional Commissioner of Indore, Collector of Dhar, and M/s Pithampur Industrial Waste Management Private Limited to submit an update regarding the preparations for the incineration of 337 metric tonnes (MT) of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) chemical waste.
This request comes in compliance with the guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). BGTRRD has asked the three to submit their update by February 14 so that the state government can present the progress report to the High Court during the next hearing on February 18.
The government had previously requested a six-week extension from the High Court on January 6to address public concerns and dispel misconceptions regarding air and water pollution, as well as other health issues raised by the planned incineration of the UCC waste. The 337 MT of UCC waste, which includes toxic materials from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, was transported to Pithampur for incineration in accordance with the High Court’s December 3, 2024, order.
The waste was moved through a Green Corridor in 12 specially designated containers to ensure its safe and efficient transport to the disposal site. BGTRRD Director Swatantra Kumar Singh said that the state government has taken proactive steps to tackle misinformation and reassure the public. He said that officials have been directed to provide the public with accurate, factual information to counter the spread of false news and to prevent public panic caused by the influence of miscreants and vested interests.
