Argentina qualified for the men’s football event of the upcoming Paris Olympics this year after defeating Brazil 1-0 in the South American qualifiers. Brazil was seeking its third consecutive Olympic medal but missed a spot in the Olympic men’s tournament for the first time since 2004. Argentina won 1-0 with a goal from Louisiana in the 78th minute of the match. Argentina finished the final qualifier competition with five points, tied with Venezuela and Paraguay. Brazil had three points. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Brazil won its first Olympic gold medal with a decisive penalty kick by Neymar in the penalty shootout against Germany at the Maracana Stadium. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Brazil retained their gold medal title with a victory over Spain in the final with a goal by Malcolm in the 108th minute. Argentina won gold medals at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics.
