Archbishop John Rodrigues Highlights Cross As Symbol Of Redemption And Unwavering Love |

At the Good Friday service on the grounds of Saint Pius X church and school, Mulund, Archbishop of Bombay, John Rodrigues, talked about the transformative power of the cross, emphasising its evolution from a symbol of Roman torture to Christianity’s central emblem of salvation.

Addressing congregants, Bishop John underscored that the cross’s significance lies in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the ‘high priest’ who offered himself as the ultimate act of redemption. Quoting scriptures, he noted Jesus’ final words, ‘It is finished’, signifying the triumph over suffering and evil through divine obedience.

The Bishop drew parallels between Jesus’ compassion and a parable of a holy man repeatedly aiding a scorpion despite being stung, stating, “It is the scorpion’s nature to sting, but it is our nature to love—why should I let its nature change mine?” This story, he explained, mirrors Christ’s unwavering love amid humanity’s flaws.

The service included a public veneration of the cross, uniting congregants globally in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.

Concluding his message, Bishop John invited all to reflect on God’s mercy and prepare hearts for Easter’s joy. The service concluded with veneration of the cross, symbolising acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice and commitment to living compassionately and followed by holy communion.
