The year’s first biggest lot of Alphonso mangoes was reported to have entered the APMC market on Saturday with 175 boxes from Sindhudurg district. The mangoes entered for the first time on Friday with around only 12 boxes. “Today being Maghi Ganapati, most of the farmers chose the auspicious day to give their first batch. We were expecting close to 100 boxes but what we received was an over whelming supply of 175 boxes each containing around 4 to 6 dozen mangoes,” Mango trader Sanjay PAnsare from the market said.

Each dozen of mangoes charge around Rs 3000 per dozen in whole sale market depending on the size of the mango. “The prices are expected to go down only after March 20 once the supply increases. Last year, there was extended monsoon which damaged many flowers of the mango tree due to which there is a delay in Alphonso season this year,” Pansare added.

The mangoes from the market are currently purchased by retailers in Crawford market, Ghatkopar and other parts of Mumbai wherein there is a huge demand for the mangoes even with the high pricing.

Due to the large quantity supply of the mangoes on Saturday, the rate of Alphonso mango which was Rs 300 per dozen on Friday came down to Rs 200 on Saturday. The traders have alleged that many retailers are selling Karnataka Alphonso as Devgad Alphonso and the buyers need to be aware of the same.
