Navi Mumbai: APMC police has arrested a man for allegedly trying to set his sister ablaze on suspicion of having an affair with their neighbour. The incident was reported on Friday evening near Punit Corner, close to Ekta Nagar slum in the APMC area. The accused, Shakaldin Ganesh Singh alias Sadiq Sheikh (22), who poured petrol on his sister, has been arrested by APMC police on charges of attempting to murder her.

The 17-year-old victim lives in Ekta Nagar slum near Punit Corner, APMC, with her parents and brother. The person who lives next door to the victim is a man named Lambu, an electrical technician, who resides with his wife and children. The victim was seen talking to Lambu by his wife, which led her to suspect that her husband was having an illegitimate relationship with the victim. Due to these suspicion, Lambu’s wife began to frequently verbally abuse the victim.

As a result, the victim’s brother, Sheikh, also began to suspect that his sister had an affair with the neighbor, Lambu. Acting on this suspicion, on Friday evening around 6 PM, he verbally abused his sister and took her near Punit Corner. There, he poured petrol from a plastic bottle that he had brought and pressed a knife to her neck. He then attempted to set her on fire by holding a lighter in one hand.

The drama attracted a lot of crowd. Someone from the crowd alerted the cops. The police rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the victim from her brother’s grasp. The police then took Sheikh into custody and brought him to the police station. “Based on the victim’s complaint, we have filed a case against Sheikh for attempting to murder her and have arrested him,” said a police officer from APMC police station.
