Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday paid tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh by writing an emotional letter. In this letter he recalled the incident when Dr. Singh had offered scholarship to his children while he was in jail. On the social media platform ‘X’, Anwar described Dr. Manmohan Singh as “a leader who played an important role in establishing India as a global economic power”. Dr. Singh died on Thursday night in Delhi at the age of 92. Anwar addressed him as “my friend, my brother, Manmohan”.
Scholarship offer and Anwar’s emotional connection
Anwar Ibrahim, who was in jail from 1999 to 2004, remembered the selfless kindness of Dr Singh. Dr. Manmohan Singh was the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha at that time. He had proposed giving scholarships to Anwar’s children, including his son Ihsan. Although Anwar politely declined the offer, the incident touched his heart deeply.
Anwar wrote, “Dr. Leaders like Singh were symbols of truth, honesty and steadfast courage. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.” He said it was time he shared this incident with the Malaysian public.
Gratitude to Dr. Manmohan Singh
Anwar said in his letter, “During the difficult days of my imprisonment, when I was surrounded by despair and darkness, Dr. Manmohan Singh supported me as a true friend. His calm and generous personality reflects his great character.”
He further wrote, “This act of kindness defines his personality and he will always be in my heart.” Expressing his deep condolences on the demise of Dr. Singh, Anwar wrote, “Farewell, my dear friend and brother, Manmohan.”
Highlighting Dr. Singh’s global role
In his message, Anwar praised Dr. Singh’s global economic leadership abilities and described him as a hero in raising India as an economic power. He said, “Dr. “Manmohan Singh’s policies and his leadership not only strengthened India economically but also influenced the entire world.”
This contribution of Dr. Singh was a source of inspiration for Anwar personally. Concluding his letter with emotional words, he wrote, “Your memories will always be with us. You are an inspiration not only to me, but to the entire world.”
