The Andheri police have busted a gang involved in the theft of a two-tola gold chain worth ₹50,000 from an elderly man. The chain was snatched while the victim was walking, and the accused fled the scene. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the case from Mumbra. They have been identified as Wasim Noor Mohammad Sheikh, 30, Shahid Farooq Sheikh, 20, and Taufiq Rijaya Ahmed Indrisi, 21, — all residents of Mumbra. This is reportedly their first offence, and the police have recovered the stolen gold chain.
According to the police, the victim, Shankar Joshi, is a senior citizen residing on Sahar Road in the Koldongri area of Andheri East. On May 5, at around 11:15 PM, after dinner, he was walking along the footpath in front of Vijayanagar Society when three young men approached and pushed him. When Joshi questioned them, one of the youths slapped him and snatched his gold chain before fleeing towards Andheri railway station. Joshi immediately reported the incident to the Andheri police, the police then registered a case of robbery.
The police reviewed around 250–300 CCTV footages from the area and the nearby railway station. From the footage, the suspects were seen getting into a car at Vakola Junction. The police traced the car and obtained the details of the person who had booked it. Based on this information, the suspects — Wasim Sheikh, Shahid Sheikh, and Taufiq Indrisi — were detained from Mumbra for questioning.
During interrogation, the three confessed to committing the crime. The stolen gold chain was recovered from them. All three suspects reside in Mumbra and have no prior criminal records.
