Independent MP from Khadur Sahib in Punjab and pro -Khalistan pro -Amritpal Singh under the National Security Act (NSA), the detention period is being extended by one year. For the last two years, he has been lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam. He was arrested on 23 April 2023 and is now completing exactly two years.
According to sources, a team of Punjab Police had prepared to bring Amritpal to Punjab, but after consulting the security agencies of the state and central government, it was decided that it would be kept in a year and detention.
Home Department approved
On the recommendation of the District Magistrate of Amritsar, the Home Department of Punjab decided to extend this custody. Apart from NSA, Amritpal has also been booked under the illegal activity (prevention) Act i.e. UAPA.
Case related to attack on Ajnala police station
Amritpal Singh was arrested in connection with the attack on Ajnala police station in Punjab. Nine of his associates in this case were also detained under NSA. He was later transferred to various jails in Punjab after the detention ended. These include Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh alias Prime Minister Bajeke, Gurmeet Singh Gill, Sarabjit Singh Kalsi, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Harjit Singh alias Chacha, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Johal and Pappalpreet Singh.
Fundamental leader who won independent elections in 2024
Amritpal Singh is the head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization and won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Khadur Sahib. He describes himself as a follower of Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed. Amritpal changed his hulia on 18 March 2023 to dodge the police in Jalandhar district. After this, after absconding for about a month, he was arrested from Rhode village in Moga district.
