Along with this, the entire network included in the drug trade should be demolished to make Manipur intoxicated.
President’s rule implemented in the state
President’s rule was implemented in Manipur on 13 February after N Biren Singh resigned as the Chief Minister. The term of the state assembly has been suspended by 2027. Security reviews were conducted when the Governor on 20 February warned of handing over his weapons to all the people possessing illegal and looted weapons. Over a period of seven days, more than 300 weapons were refunded by the public in the districts of the valley mainly. It also includes 246 weapons surrendered by Maetai extremist group Arambai Tangole.
Governor extended the deadline for returning arms
After more time was sought by the people of both the hill and the valley areas, the governor was robbed on Friday and extended the deadline for depositing illegal weapons till 6 pm on 6 pm. Thousands of weapons were looted from police at several places in Manipur during the initial phase of ethnic violence, which started about 22 months ago. The violence began in May 2023 when the Maetai community organized a ‘Tribal Ekta March’ demanding the status of Scheduled Tribes in the hilly districts. Despite several attempts by the central government to bring warning communities to the conversation table, permanent peace in the state is still a distant possibility.
