The US has expressed clear support with India regarding the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tehwwur Hussain Rana. US officials said that the 2008 Mumbai attacks shook the whole world and the US stands with India’s effort from the beginning to try to bring responsible people into the dock of justice.
On 9 April, the US extradited 64-year-old Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian citizen, to appear before the Indian courts for its alleged role in the 26/11 attacks plan.
Partnership against terrorism
US State Department spokesman Tami Bruce said, “The United States has long been standing with India to bring the culprits of 26/11 attacks under the purview of justice. As President Trump said, the US and India will continue to work together to deal with global terrorism.” He also said that Rana is now in India’s custody and America is proud to be a part of this process.
Tammy Bruce said that some people may not remember the horrors of the attacks in which a total of 166 people, including six American citizens, lost their lives. He described it as a major setback for the whole world.
Earlier, the US Department of Justice also said in a statement that Rana’s extradition is an important step towards providing justice to the victims. The department spokesman said, “This step is an important initiative towards ensuring justice for those six American citizens and all other innocent people, whose life went into this attack.”
Try to avoid legal battle and extradition
Tehwavur Rana was kept at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. He filed an emergency petition to a Supreme Court Judge Elena Kagan to stop extradition. But this petition was dismissed in early March 2025.
In the petition, Rana claimed that he was in danger of torture in the event of extradited India, as he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin. He also said that his medical condition is serious and if he was sent to India, this custody could be similar to the death penalty for him. Citing many diseases in the petition, he also questioned proper medical facilities in India.
However, the court dismissed all its claims and paved the way for extradition to India, which will now face Indian agencies in the investigation of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
