American Airlines Flight From New York To Delhi Makes Emergency Landing In Rome After Bomb Threat | Representative image
In a shocking incident for the passengers, an American Airlines flight AA292 travelling from New York’s JFK Airport to Delhi had to make an emergency landing in Rome after a bomb threat was made. The American Airline flight AA292 was carrying 285 passengers on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner when the incident occurred.
As per reports, the American Airlines Flight AA292 New York to New Delhi is now under fighter jet escort as it diverts to Rome in Italy due to a reported bomb threat. A video has surfaced on social media showing the flight being escorted by the fighter jets.
Details About The Incident
As per reports, the plane took off from New York at around 8:30 PM on Saturday (February 22) night for its 14-hour journey to Delhi. However, while flying over the Caspian Sea, it suddenly turned around. According to flight tracking data, the plane had already flown over the Atlantic Ocean, Europe and the Black Sea before making the emergency diversion to Rome.
Why Rome?
Rome might seem like an unusual choice for an emergency landing, as there were other airports along the way. However, American Airlines has a strong presence in Rome, meaning the airline can better assist passengers and prepare the aircraft for the rest of its journey after the threat is handled.
The fact that the plane did not land as soon as possible suggests that American Airlines and U.S. authorities may not have considered the threat to be very serious.
Strict Rules on Bomb Threats
India takes bomb threats very seriously, no matter how unlikely they seem. That is why the flight had to be diverted and checked. If this flight had been travelling from Delhi to New York instead, it might have continued to its destination without stopping. However, since it was heading to India, American Airlines had to follow Indian rules.
India faced many fake bomb threats in the past year. This caused several flights to make emergency landings. Some of these threats were shared on social media. Many cases have been registered in the country in connection of these fake bomb threats and investigation is underway.
