America banned its employees deployed in China for having a love affair with Chinese citizens

There have been long stressful relations between China and the US. Political, diplomatic and safety decisions between these two countries are often in discussion. In this sequence, the US has recently taken an extraordinary and strict step, under which its employees in China have been forbidden to have any kind of romantic or physical relationship with Chinese citizens. This information has been received from four people who are directly related to the case.

New policy implemented from January 2025

According to media reports, this policy was implemented in January 2025. At that time, Nicholas Burns, who was US Ambassador to China, finalized the ban before leaving China.

Although American government agencies already had strict guidelines regarding private relations of employees, the complete ban of this level has been seen for the first time. The decision was taken when it was felt that the personal relations of US authorities deployed in China could threaten national security.

Who applies this restriction?

Initially this policy was implemented only to employees who were employed in the US Embassy as security guards or assistant staff and five consulates in China (Beijing, Guangzhu, Shanghai, Sheenyang, Wuhan, and Hong Kong).

But in January, it was implemented to all American employees, which are posted in China. This policy does not apply to American officials working outside China.

Special provisions for already made relations

American employees who are already in a relationship with Chinese citizens will have to take special permission to get exemption from this policy.

If their request is rejected, they will either have to end their relationship or leave the job. On violation of this policy, the concerned employee will be immediately removed from China.

Concern about safety from honeytrap

US officials believe that China tries to get secret information from US authorities using the “HoneyTrap” strategy.

American officials are trained before being posted in China, stating how Chinese intelligence agencies can trap the authorities through attractive women. It is also explained that intelligence agents can be deployed to monitor their activities.

No official response

This policy has not been declared publicly. The US State Department has not commented on the issue, and the National Security Council refused to react, calling it the subject of the State Department.
