Mumbai: An intervention application on behalf of the Mumbai-based All India Sunni Jamiyatul Ulema in the Waqf matter was filed in the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday.
A delegation led by Syed Moinuddin Ashraf, president and Sayeed Noori, vice-president of the All India Sunni Jamiyatul Ulema, visited Delhi to file the intervention application through advocate Shubail Farook.
At least 15 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court after the Parliament passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill last week. Earlier, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The petition was filed by Maulana Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, general secretary of the AIMPLB.

The board’s spokesperson, Dr Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, alleged that the amendments are arbitrary, discriminatory, and exclusionary. He said that the amendments raise key concerns
like the infringement of fundamental rights, like Articles 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantee freedom of conscience, the right to practice and propagate religion, and the right to establish and manage institutions for religious and charitable purposes.
The petition also raised concerns about government control, discriminatory provisions like the requirement of Waqif (donor) to be a practising Muslim for at least five years, and denial of rights and protections afforded to other religious communities, such as Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, and Buddhists.
The AIMPLB has urged the Supreme Court to annul the contentious amendments. Senior advocate M R Shamshad drafted the petition, while advocate Talha Abdurrahman represented the All India Muslim Personal Law Board as the advocate-on-record.
