ALH Dhruv helicopter is still grounded, affecting military operations

Indigenously developed advanced advance helicopter (ALH) ‘Dhruv’ is once again in discussion. On 5 January 2025, there was an ALH crash of the Coast Guard in Porbandar, after which all the ALH helicopters have been banned. Until the cause of the accident is known, these helicopters will remain grounded.

ALH Dhruv is an indigenous helicopter manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and is used in several operations of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. However, it has been in constant controversies due to this helicopter accidents in recent years.

Increased challenges in military operations

The Times of India According to the report, there are a total of 330 ALH Dhruv helicopters in the country, all of which are currently out of the flight. Due to their unavailability, many campaigns of Indian Armed Forces are being affected. The army particularly depends on these helicopters for supporting flights and missions in the border areas-it is China-Pakistan border or disaster relief and rescue mission.

A senior army official said that ALH Pilot is losing his efficiency due to not being able to fly for a long time and he has to take training only on the simulator.

Long history of accidents

The construction of the Alh Dhruv began in 1979 by HAL and was officially inducted into the army in 2002. The specialty of this helicopter is that it is a multi -roll aircraft weighing five tons, with 12 passengers with two pilots. It can fly at a speed of 290 kilometers per hour.

The Indian Air Force has 75, Navy has 24 and Coast Guard has 19 ALH helicopters. In the last 25 years, many helicopters of this model have become victims of accidents, which has raised questions on its credibility.
