Social media has become a part of daily life, but foreign students in America are having difficulty using it. The US State Department (DOS) is canceling the student visa of students participating in political activities on social media platforms. The situation has become so bad that if a student likes or shares a post or comments on it, then his visa is being canceled, considering it as a political activity.

This action taken by President Donald Trump’s government has increased exile. People are also questioning freedom of expression and proper process. The US government is monitoring the activities happening in the campus. Students raising their voice against government policies are being identified on social media. If someone is caught, he is being directly deported. In such a situation, it becomes important to understand how the government is identifying foreign students and how they are deporting them.

In fact, the Ministry of External Affairs has sent email to hundreds of students and asked them to leave the country. Action has also been taken against some Indian students. The thing to note here is that not only the students performing on the campus are facing action, but political activism on social media is also causing trouble for them. Today, the Ministry of External Affairs has launched an AI-based social media review for the visa monitoring process. Students’ profiles are being scanned through AI before providing student visas. If something suspicious is found in a person’s profile, he will not be given a visa.

What do we know about Donald Trump after Project 2025?

Let us tell you that in 2023-24 there were 1.1 million foreign students in the US, out of which 3,31,000 came from India to study here. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio has also started a program called ‘Catch and Rivok’ to monitor foreign students in the country. Under this, visas of more than 300 students have been canceled in the last three weeks. Visas of most people suspected of supporting terrorist organizations have been canceled. Under this program, the social media profiles of the students are also being investigated and then their visa is being canceled if any suspected post is found or students are found involved in political activities.

What will happen if the visa is canceled?
Visa cancellation notice of the Ministry of External Affairs is very simple and straightforward. Students have been told that their visa has been canceled. If they stop without a visa they can be detained. They may also face difficulty in getting fines and visas in future. The notice also states that students should submit their passport to the US Embassy or Consulate before leaving the country so that the visa can be canceled.

Along with this, External Affairs Minister Rubio has also said that the embassy officials should examine the social media of all visa applicants. If any objectionable information is received, the authorities should take a screenshot of it, so that the applicants do not change their online history later. If nothing is found wrong, the authorities will have to write that they have reviewed.
