The case has caught political tussle after the Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi was suspended from the assembly for praising Aurangzeb in Maharashtra.

SP President Akhilesh Yadav has come out openly in support of Abu Azmi. He called the suspension an attack on freedom of expression and said that the SP leaders are not afraid of telling the truth.

Akhilesh Yadav’s statement: ‘The tongue of truth cannot be controlled’

Akhilesh Yadav posted on ‘X’ on Wednesday and said:

“If the basis of suspension starts being affected by ideology, then what is the difference between freedom of expression and subordination? Our MLAs or MPs, their fearless Danishmandi is unmatched. ”

“If some people think that ‘suspension’ can put a curb on the tongue of truth, then it is the childishness of their negative thinking.”

Background of the case: Why did Abu Azmi suspension?

  • Abu Azmi praised Aurangzeb and said that he was not a cruel ruler and built many temples.
  • He also said that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb’s fight was not between the Hindu-Muslim, but about the administration.
  • The statement was considered objectionable in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and was suspended from the budget session.
