Sunil Chhetri has taken with him the record of playing the most number of matches in Indian football with 151 matches and scoring the most number of goals with 94 goals. Sunil, who was once ahead of Messi in terms of scoring most goals at the international level, slipped to fourth place at the time of his retirement. Ahead of Sunil are Ronaldo (135 goals), Messi (112) and Ali Dai (108). With Sunil’s retirement, the year 2024 was very disappointing for the Indian men’s football team and they could not win a single match.
