Mumbai Customs Seize Hydroponic Weed Worth Rs 60 Lakh, Arrest Suspect Arriving from Bangkok | Representational Image

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Airport Customs has arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly smuggling hydroponic weed worth Rs 60 lakh from Bangkok.

According to the police, in the intervening night of December 5-6, based on specific intelligence, that a passenger arriving from Bangkok might carry narcotics substance, the AIU officers intercepted the suspect P. Shantharam, a resident of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Customs officials then checked his baggage and recovered greenish dry leafy substance from few plastic pouches. On testing the said substance it was learnt to be hydroponic weed (marijuana). A total of 600 grams of hydroponic weed valued at Rs 60 lakh had been recovered from the passenger, agency officials said.

“The accused admitted to having knowledge, possession, carrying, non-declaration, smuggling and recovery of hydroponic weed in his baggage. He further stated that the said substance was brought by him for self consumption. He was then placed under arrest,” said a Customs official.

The agency officials are probing from whom the accused had procured drugs in Bangkok.
