Pune: After Months Of Lying Unused In Dust, Maharashtra Begins Distribution Of 100 Hearse Vans |

The Maharashtra Public Health Department has finally begun the distribution of 100 hearse vans that had been lying unused for the past three months. These vans were purchased during the tenure of former Health Minister Tanaji Sawant at a cost of Rs 35 crores. The vans were intended to be distributed across the state based on usage.

The Free Press Journal had reported about the unused hearse vans which were lying in dust in Pune. Health activist Sharad Shetty had also alleged that the procurement of these hearses was a misuse of public funds under then-Health Minister Sawant. The issue had created a stir in political circles of Pune and the state. Now, acting on it, the state government has finally acted.

Pune to get 4 vans

Dr. Vaijanath Galande, Deputy Director of Health Services (Transport), said, “On Friday, five hearse vans were sent to Nagpur, and on Saturday, three to Washim. Pune district will receive four vans. The distribution will proceed according to usage.”

The first lot of 32 mortuary vans was purchased on August 6, 2024, for Rs 10.54 crore. Another 25 vans were procured on January 16, 2025, followed by 27 on January 27, 2025, and 50 on February 7, 2025. The tender was awarded to VE Commercials, with a 120-day work order to deliver all the vehicles.

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, an official outlined the features of the vans. “They can transport bodies 200-300 km while maintaining a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius. The AC runs on battery and charges while driving,” he said.
