African swine fever wreaks havoc in Mizoram, more than 1,050 pigs killed so far

Mizoram has once again received an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). More than 1,050 pigs have lost their lives in the new cases revealed in the month of March. Officials of the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department (AHVD) have informed that so far 34 areas of the districts of Longlai, Mumit and Siaha have been declared as ASF -affected areas.

Border areas affected the most

Longlalai district is bordering the border of Myanmar and Bangladesh, while Mmt is connected to Tripura and Bangladesh and Siyaha Myanmar. This virus spreads rapidly in the border areas, making the situation even more serious.

More than 400 pigs had to be killed

AHVD teams have killed more than 400 infected pigs and their children in the three districts, so that the spread of the disease can be stopped. On 20 March, the new outbreak of ASF was confirmed after testing at Northeast Regional Disease Diagnostic Lab (NERDL) in Guwahati.
