Mumbai: The state government has appointed advocate Shoaib Memon special public prosecutor in the sensational killing of three time legislator Ziauddin Abdul Rahim Siddique alias Baba Siddique at a Dussehra rally in suburban Bandra.
Speaking exclusively to The Free Press Journal, the criminal lawyer practising for 33 years in Bombay High Court advocate Shoaib Memon confirmed accepting the Maharashtra Government proposal to appoint him the special public prosecutor in the assassination of former MLA and state minister Baba Siddique.
“India is keenly watching as to what will be the outcome of the trial and whether the guilty will be punished. It is important that all accused get a fair trial and the guilty get severe punishment,” said advocate Shoaib Memon.
The killing of 66 year old NCP leader Baba Siddique on 12 October 2024 by alleged shooters of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang before the state assembly elections had set a political storm in Maharashtra.
The veteran legal officer with several high profile cases including Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) will be representing the state for the first time as the special public prosecutor.
“I m humbled to get my first case as public prosecutor to represent a sensitive political assassination case linked to international criminal syndicate,” expressed Memon.
Asked about his strategy for the trial, advocate Memon said he was still waiting for the chargesheet and the investigation papers of the case to study and make a water tight case to ensure conviction of the guilty after a fair trial.
The Mumbai Police has arrested a total of 26 accused including the shooters, weapon suppliers, financiers and logistic support provided to the killers.
