Mumbai: Activist and trustee of Watchdog Foundation, Godfrey Pimenta, has written to the Chief Minister’s Office, the BMC and the environment and forest department heads, urging them to protect and preserve a 400-year-old heritage tree on Aarey Colony road.

Pimenta said that a 400-year-old Baobab tree has been partially covered during the installation of stone carvings along the newly-constructed concrete road near Ganesh Mandir, Marol Maroshi Road next to the JVLR bridge.

“The ongoing work near the tree is obscured and raises concerns about its potential impact on this heritage tree,” read his email to the authorities.

“We urge the BMC to ensure that no harm is caused to the tree, which is not only a vital part of the ecosystem but also a significant piece of Mumbai’s natural heritage,” Pimenta added.
