Mumbai: Dismissed RPF constable Chetan Singh Chaudhary, involved in killing four persons on Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express, in July 2023, is found to be mentally unstable and the Akola prison authorities, where he is lodged, has approached the Dindoshi court to transfer him to hospital in Nagpur for further treatment.
Chaudhary was arrested after he shot dead four people – three passengers and his senior colleague on the train on July 31, 2023. Akola prison had written to the Dindoshi court informing the court that Chaudhary was suffering from a mental ailment.
The prison authorities said, that on December 19, Chaudhary was found to be unwell. He was referred to the district hospital for treatment. Upon his medical examination, the doctors found that he was mentally unstable and wrote a remark as ‘mentally sick/disorder symptoms’ on his case papers.
Based on these remarks, the prison authorities moved the plea to allow him to be shifted to a mental hospital in Nagpur. The court had sought a reply from the prosecution and victim, which was filed on Thursday. The prosecution objected to his transfer to Nagpur Hospital but instead asked that he should be shifted to Thane Mental Hospital. He prayed that keeping Chaudhary at Thane would be convenient for court proceedings.
Meanwhile, the lawyers for the victims objected to the plea saying that as per the chargesheet, no medical abnormality was found. The lawyer said upon perusal of his own doctor’s report, it is clear that he is fit and has no mental health issues.
