IMD Annual Climate Summary: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday released its Annual Climate Summary 2024 on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. In this report, weather related events in India last year have been discussed in detail. It also presents a lot of weather-related data which can be intimidating. It is noteworthy that the year 2024 is being said to be the hottest year ever on Earth. Experts say that last year the Earth’s temperature was the highest since 1901. Its effect was also seen in India where weather related disasters caused huge devastation due to climate change.
More than 3200 people died due to weather related events in the year 2024
According to this IMD report, more than 3200 people have died due to severe weather related events in the country in the year 2024. If we analyze this, last year 1374 people died in India due to lightning and storm. Apart from this, 1287 people died due to floods and heavy rains and 459 people died due to heat wave.
A new record was recorded in 2024 compared to 1901
Apart from this, the report also shows that since 1901, many places have made new records of both temperature and rainfall. In which a new record of highest rainfall in a day was recorded in Porbandar on July 19, 2024 with 485.8 mm rainfall. The heat was also very high. The temperature was recorded at 50.5 degrees Celsius in Churu, Rajasthan.
A large number of people died due to bad weather
Talking about the state-wise situation, Bihar has lost the most lives due to lightning and storm, while floods and heavy rains in Kerala have emerged as the worst situation. Apart from these two states, a large number of people have lost their lives due to bad weather in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
