The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a large-scale protest,  ‘Maha Aakrosh Morcha,’ against the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) over persistent student grievances on Thursday at the main building of the university. The organisation alleged that for the past 2-3 years, students have faced severe issues, including inefficiencies in the examination department, failure of free education schemes’ implementation for female students and inadequate basic amenities. Frustrated by the repeated complaints and administration inaction, ABVP mobilised over 1,500 students from Pune, Ahilyanagar and Nashik to demand immediate reforms.

Students alleged that the revised re-evaluation criteria have compromised their fundamental rights. Critical positions such as registrar, controller of examinations and dean are currently being managed by acting officers. Students residing on campus face daily challenges, including hostel safety and cleanliness issues, declining food quality, drug abuse incidents and pest infestations.

Moreover, ABVP has raised approximately 61 demands, including making photocopies of answer sheets available for ₹100, releasing the annual academic calendar at the beginning of the year, and taking strict action against bogus colleges.

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, Atharva Kulkarni, ABVP, Western Maharashtra State Minister, said, “The university administration has been adopting anti-student policies for years. Despite multiple representations, discussions and follow-ups, the Vice-Chancellor has ignored these serious issues. Students from every taluka of Pune, Ahilyanagar and Nashik districts participated in this protest. This is a victory for ordinary students, and we will continue our fight until all demands are met.”

Suresh Gosavi, Vice Chancellor, SPPU, intervened amid the protest and assured to fulfil the demands. Gosavi assured that the issues would be resolved and all demands would be discussed with the relevant governing bodies for further action.

After being given assurance, the protest was temporarily suspended, but ABVP warned that if the demands were not met soon, they would escalate their agitation.
