The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a crushing defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, after which the party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting with the newly elected MLAs and other leaders on Sunday. The meeting discussed strengthening the party further and playing the role of a strong opposition.

AAP’s plan to surround BJP

After the meeting, former Chief Minister Atishi said that all the MLAs have been instructed to participate in the service of the public in their respective areas and play the role of a strong opposition. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party will ensure that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fulfills its promises, including a plan to give ₹ 2500 per month to women.

In addition, AAP will try to ensure that Delhiites continue to get 200 units of free electricity, best government schools, mohalla clinics and hospitals. MP Sanjay Singh, National General Secretary (Organization) of the party and MP Dr. Sandeep Pathak, Delhi Pradesh Convenor Gopal Rai and other leaders were present in the meeting.

Intensive analysis of election defeat continues

Former minister Atishi said that the election results are being reviewed and the party is churning deeply on the reasons for the defeat. AAP has accepted the public mandate, but believes that elections were not fair.

Senior AAP leader Sanjeev Jha also discussed the further strategy with the leaders present in the meeting. It was decided in the meeting that the party will play the role of a strong opposition in Delhi and would force the BJP to fulfill all its promises.

Leader of opposition will be nominated soon

During the meeting, it was decided that the MLA would ensure that the BJP government should not stop the free services and facilities provided by the former government of the Aam Aadmi Party. All MLAs have been asked to be vigilant in this regard.

Apart from this, the Leader of the Opposition will be nominated in the Aam Aadmi Party Legislature Party meeting in the coming days, which will lead the party in the assembly.

After his resignation, the Lieutenant Governor dissolved the seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly and started the process of formation of a new government.

The BJP has not yet officially announced the Chief Ministerial candidate. State officials of the party say that soon this will be decided in the meeting of the Legislature Party.

The announcement of the Lieutenant Governor and the process of new government begins

According to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, Atishi reached Rajnivas at 11 am on Sunday and submitted her resignation. Accepting this, the Lieutenant Governor said that Atishi will act as the acting Chief Minister till the formation of the new government. At the same time, he also issued a notification to dissolve the Delhi Assembly.

Now there will be a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party, in which the leader will be elected. After this, a BJP delegation will meet the Lieutenant Governor and make a proposal to form the government. The swearing -in ceremony of the new government will be held on the fixed date.

Atishi’s short term and election defeat

Atishi was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on 21 September 2024. Earlier, he resigned after Arvind Kejriwal went to jail in the excise scam, after which Atishi was made the Chief Minister. However, he suffered defeat in the election after just 141 days of tenure and resigned on 9 February 2025.

In this election, AAP got only 22 seats, which was the worst performance in the last three elections of the party. 36 seats were required to form the government in Delhi, while the BJP won 48 seats and won an absolute majority and returned to power after 27 years.

BJP returns to power

The Aam Aadmi Party won 28 seats in the 2013 elections, winning 67 out of 70 seats in 2015 to win a one -sided majority, while in 2020 the party won 62 seats. But this time the party got a big shock and BJP won 48 out of 70 seats and took power in its hands.

In this election, Atishi defeated Ramesh Bidhuri of BJP from Kalkaji assembly seat. However, the Aam Aadmi Party suffered defeat due to the party’s overall performance. Atishi admitted this defeat and said that his workers worked hard, but the mandate of the public would have to be accepted.

Atishi became the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi

Atishi’s name has been recorded in history as the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi. Before them, BJP’s Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit of Congress have been the Chief Minister of Delhi.

  • Sushma swaraj: The first woman became the Chief Minister and she held office for 52 days.
  • Shiela Dixit: She was associated with Congress and was the Chief Minister for the longest (15 years).
  • Atishi: Aam Aadmi became the Chief Minister from the party and held office for 141 days.

Apart from this, Arvind Kejriwal, who held the post of Chief Minister for 48 days in 2013, is also among the Chief Ministers with the lowest tenure of Delhi.
