Ecuador Earthquake 2025: On Friday (April 25) on the Pacific coast of the South American country of Ecuador, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake occurred on the Richter scale. Due to the earthquake, fierce tremors were felt in at least 10 provinces of the country and houses were reported to be damaged in some places. Fortunately there is no news of any casualty so far.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Pacific Ocean, about 20.9 km from the city of Esmeraldas. The earthquake in the region occurred at a depth of 35 km, which made its effect more intense. Esmeraldas is located about 296 km north-west from Qweto, the capital of Ecuador. According to information received from the local administration, some houses got cracks after the earthquake, while some of the walls collapsed. Although public transport and power supply was temporarily affected, the administration immediately started relief and rescue operations.

Tsunami warning and cancellation

After the earthquake, the administration immediately issued a tsunami warning on the coast in view of the possible tsunami threat. Citizens were instructed to be vigilant keeping in mind the possibility of high waves in the sea. However, the warning was officially withdrawn immediately after the intensive review of the situation. Disaster management agencies are currently studying the effects of earthquake on land and local people have been urged to live in safe places.

Why do earthquakes occur?

The inner part of the Earth is made up of seven major tectonic plates, which are constantly moving from their position. When two plates collide or cling to each other, there is heavy friction between them. When this energy is suddenly free, the surface of the earth moves and it is called an earthquake. Like other countries falling under the Pacific Ocean Fire Roy, Ecuador is always sensitive to earthquakes. Therefore, there is a possibility of earthquake from time to time in such areas.

Increase in tectonic movements globally?

After this earthquake in Ecuador, it has been observed that many powerful earthquakes have also occurred in countries such as India, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia and the United States in recent times. Therefore, some geological and climate scientists are indicating an increase in tectonic movements worldwide. Some scientists also believe that climate change, sea level fluctuations and human intervention are causing unusual movements in the geological activities of the Earth. However, no definite conclusions have come up yet and research continues.

Urge to be vigilant from citizens

The Ecuador administration has urged local citizens to remain calm, do not believe in rumors and follow official instructions. The government has also said that preparations should be made for future shocks. This earthquake once again reminded us that man is still helpless in front of the powers of nature and emergency preparation is the greatest security for the future.
