Colombo: According to salt producers in Putlam district of Sri Lanka, about 15,000 metric tonnes of salt has been washed away due to heavy rains last week. Due to this, the price of a sack of salt has increased five times.

While salt production has come to a standstill due to heavy rains, on the other hand the hills produced by salt have been washed away in the rain. Therefore, salt production in Sri Lanka is becoming negligible. People have seen a huge increase in the prices of essential commodities like salt. Salt traders who have salt stock are eating cream.

According to media reports, the reason for reaching the price of salt in Sri Lanka from Rs 125 to 145 per kg is that the country has produced only 23 percent of its total salt production.
